Zirconia Fused Alumina (also called ZA abrasive, zirconia alumina, or zirconia corundum) is a high-performance fused abrasive produced by melting carefully proportioned high-purity alumina (Al₂O₃) and zirconia (ZrO₂) feedstock in an electric arc furnace at temperatures above 2000 °C. The molten bath is then tapped, directionally cooled, crushed, and screen-sized to deliver a controlled grain shape and a characteristic eutectic intergrowth of alumina and zirconia crystals.
This fine Al₂O₃–ZrO₂ eutectic microstructure is what sets ZA apart from ordinary brown fused alumina (BFA) and white fused alumina (WFA). Instead of being a single alumina crystal, ZA grain contains finely dispersed zirconia phases that dramatically improve fracture toughness, impact resistance and self-sharpening behavior under heavy grinding pressure. That is why ZA grain is the preferred choice for high-loading, high-force grinding and cut-off operations on tough metals.
We produce ZA grain directly from our own arc furnaces, which means we control the chemistry, fusion temperature and cooling curve at every step — not just re-crush and re-screen stock from third parties.
Buyers typically ask for the following data before placing a trial order. All values are typical reference figures; a mill test certificate (COA) with batch-specific results is issued with every shipment.
Typical Chemical Composition (wt%)
Typical Physical Properties
Brown fused alumina (BFA) is tough but not sharp enough for high-tensile steels, and white fused alumina (WFA) is hard and sharp but brittle — it fractures too quickly under heavy pressure and wears out fast. Zirconia fused alumina is engineered to sit between the two:
· Superior toughness — resists whole-grain fracture under high grinding pressure, so grains stay in the wheel longer.
· Controlled self-sharpening — micro-fracture exposes new cutting edges as the grain wears, keeping cut consistent and power draw stable.
· Lower grinding force & cooler cut — reduces workpiece burn on stainless and alloy steels.
· Longer abrasive life — typically 2–4x the service life of WFA/BFA in heavy-duty cut-off and grinding, lowering cost per part.
· Consistent grain shape — blocky, well-sized grains bond well in resin systems and load less on coated cloth.
We focus on abrasive-grade ZA grain. The main downstream applications are:
4.1 Bonded Abrasives
ZA25 and ZA40 are the core grain for resin-bonded grinding wheels, cutting-off discs, flap discs and depressed-center wheels designed for stainless steel, alloy steel, carbon steel and other high-tensile metals. ZA40 is the premium grade for aggressive stock removal; ZA25 offers a more cost-effective balance for general heavy grinding.
4.2 Coated Abrasives
P-grade ZA grain (P36–P220) is widely used on heavy-duty abrasive belts, abrasive sheets and disc products for weld blending, deburring, rust removal and surface conditioning in metal fabrication, shipbuilding and rail manufacturing.
4.3 Surface Preparation & Precision Blasting
Uniform, impact-resistant ZA grain is used for precision blasting, surface matting, paint/coating removal and residual-stress relief on steel structures and machined parts, where a clean, repeatable anchor profile is required.
· ZA25 — ~25% ZrO₂: general heavy grinding, good value / performance balance.
· ZA40 — ~40% ZrO₂: premium grade, maximum toughness and stock removal for stainless and hard alloys.
· Bonded abrasive grits: F16 – F220.
· Coated abrasive grits: P24 – P220.
· Micro powder: 325#, 600#, 1200# on request.
· Custom grit distributions and special sizes can be discussed against your bonding system.
We are a direct manufacturer of fused abrasives, not a trading reseller. When you order Zirconia Fused Alumina from us, you get:
· In-house electric arc furnace production — full control over raw material ratio, fusion temperature and controlled cooling, so batch chemistry stays inside the spec above.
· Every batch tested before dispatch: XRF for Al₂O₃ / ZrO₂ / impurity levels, sieve analysis per FEPA standard, magnetic content check, and bulk density measurement. COA follows every order.
· Crushing & sizing line with magnetic separation and optical sorting, giving consistent blocky grain shape and low oversize / undersize.
· Flexible packaging: 25 kg bags, 1000 kg jumbo bags, or palletized — labeled with grade, lot number and net weight.
· Export experience serving abrasive wheel manufacturers and coated-abrasive producers across [your main markets — e.g. Southeast Asia, Europe, North America, Middle East].
· Small trial orders accepted so you can run your own grinding tests before committing to bulk. Free sample (typically 1–2 kg of your chosen grade and grit) available on request.
· Technical support: our abrasive engineers can recommend ZA25 vs ZA40 and grit selection based on your workpiece, bond type and target finish.
Q1. What is zirconia fused alumina used for?
It is mainly used as the abrasive grain in resin-bonded grinding wheels, cut-off discs, flap discs, heavy-duty abrasive belts and surface-blasting media. It is especially effective on stainless steel, alloy steel and other high-tensile metals where ordinary brown or white fused alumina wears out too quickly.
Q2. Is zirconia alumina better than white fused alumina?
It depends on the application. ZA has far higher toughness and self-sharpening ability, so it lasts much longer under heavy grinding pressure. White fused alumina is harder and sharper but more brittle, and is usually preferred for precision grinding and fine finishing rather than heavy stock removal.
Q3. What is ZA40 abrasive?
ZA40 is the grade of zirconia fused alumina containing approximately 40% zirconia (ZrO₂). It is the most popular premium grade for high-performance resin grinding wheels and flap discs used on stainless steel. ZA25 (≈25% ZrO₂) is a more cost-effective alternative for medium-to-heavy general grinding.
Q4. Can you provide a sample before bulk order?
Yes. We typically send 1–2 kg free samples of the chosen grade and grit for your in-house grinding trials. You only cover the courier cost. Contact us with your target application and we will recommend the right grade.
Q5. What is your MOQ and lead time?
Trial orders from [X] kg are accepted; standard production lead time is around [15–25] days after order confirmation, depending on grade, grit and order quantity. Please send your requirement for an exact quote.
